Discussion Questions By: Tom Millard

Session #1: Setting
  1. Q: What is the setting at the beginning of the novel?
A: The setting is very isolated. There is a house in the middle of a big empty field Matt is all alone in the house all day. All of the windows and doors are locked so that no one can get in and he cant get out. Overall the setting very lonesome and empty.
  2. Q:What kind of field is Matt's house in?
A: Matt's house is in an opium field
  3. Q: When does the setting change from isolated and lonesome to more more social and interactive?
A: When Matt sees the children outside his window it starts to change but it really changes when Matt smashes the window with a pan and jumps out to play with the children.
  4. Q:Although Matt is at the same location ( his house ) the feel and mood of the place has changed how?
A: The mood of the setting used to be very isolated but when the children come and Matt breaks through the window it becomes isolated and the setting changed from him being traped in the house to freedom out side of it where there are other children.
  5. Q: When the care staff of the Big House realize Matt is a clone Rosa throws him in an empty cement room. How is this setting like his previous setting at Celia's?
A: He is alone and isolated from people.
  6. Q: How is it different?
A: It is not a nice environment like Celia's house. It is messy and cold.
  7. Q: Why does Matt like the saw dust in his living space?
A: He likes it because he can hide things and mark it so that he is the only one who knows where it is.
  8. Q: When El Patron tells every one to be nice to Matt and than Matt is his clone Matt's setting changes again. What is his setting now?
A: His setting after this is at Celia's new house at the Big House. Matt also has a new body guard that is with him all the time. I think this is the best setting for Matt so far because he is not alone and he is in a comfortable environment.
  9. Q:When Tam Lin takes Matt on the picnic what is the setting?
A: The setting is sort of like a paradise. It is full of adventures and things to explore. Tam Lin and Matt have a fun time at this place
  10. Q: Why is the worker dead in the field when Tam Lin and Matt go for there picnic
A: The worker is dead because he is an eejit and only did something when he was commanded to do it he fell behind and didn’t here the command so he worked all night and died from dehydration.
